This week we look at the 2017 13″ Apple MacBook Pro 3.1 GHz Touch Bar model, and check why it is one of our most popular models. Instead, they put the quad-core CPU in the form factor that already has to be larger (because of the larger screen), and stick with the lower-power dual-core parts in the 13" machines. Intel doesn't have a quad-core part in the same power envelope as the dual-core parts Apple uses in the 13" models- to make a 13" quad core, Apple would either have to have a distinct (thicker, maybe larger, for a bigger battery and better cooling) form factor for the 13" quad core machines (not going to happen Apple likes to keep their number of distinct SKUs to a minimum for supply chain reasons), or make all 13" machines significantly larger (also not going to happen, because the vast majority of 13" buyers don't need the extra power and presumably appreciate the lighter/thinner body). Size difference is not the deciding factor for me. It sucks how they are limiting processing power just to shave off a few millimetres. If quad core is more appealing than the size difference between the machines then definitely go with the 15".

To be clear the 13" i7 is still dual core. The quad core 15" does seem appealing to me but I'm not sure if it is a good idea to purchase a 3 generation old processor. I don't want to spend a bomb only to regret 2 years later. My current conclusion is that the 15" inch Broadwell machine would be good enough to handle things today but might slow down sooner as compared to the newest 13" Kaby Lake machine, which impacts longevity (maybe I'm wrong). My current machine is an early 2014 Macbook Air - 1.4 GHz, 4 GB RAM, which is sluggish at best. At peak I would be running about 20-25 tabs on Safari across two windows, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft Excel, Airmail, Apple Notes & Wunderlist.Īt mid level the number of tabs would come down to 15, No Adobe apps, the rest remain the same.
